The Balloon Glow – June 18th, 7:00pm – 10:00 The Balloon Glow is a popular event because it was in 3 years ago that the first one was ever staged in Charlestown along with our Bicentennial Celebration. Since then the Founder’s Day Festival has included it the week end before the Festival at the Charlestown State Park, So plan to attend this year's Charlestown Balloon Glow and Race. One of the most popular happenings is the evening Balloon Glow on Friday and just as the sun sets and twilight passes by. During the Balloon Glow, the public is able to walk among the balloons, observe how a crew puts a balloon into flight ready status from the bag it is stored in, and talk to the pilots. But the sight both from within and a distance away is an unforgettable sight. The Balloon Race – June 19th, 7:00 pm lift off The Balloon Race is a spectacle to behold. Hot air balloons rise in mass ascension from Charlestown State Park, filling the sky with blobs of color in the evening light. Numerous specialty balloons in a variety of shapes all floating lazily upward over Kentuckiana area. This main event race is a “hare and hound” race. How this race works is a single balloon, the hare, will inflate and take off. Once he has taken off, all of the other balloons are allowed to start inflating and then to take off. The hare will travel for awhile and then land. Wherever he lands, he places a large red X on the ground. The hound balloons have to try and get as close to the X as they can. The pilots all have labeled bean bags that they try to throw at the X. The beanbag that lands closest to the center of the X, will award the pilot 1st place winner. Pilots are awarded prizes at the end of race. |
