Since
the year 2000, the Charlestown Beautification Committee has volunteered
countless hours into giving Market Street (main highway through town) a face
lift and sprucing-up. Members of the committee have removed weeds, swept,
removed trash and debris, planted flowers and shrubs, and edged along sidewalks
and curbs. The Committee also made arrangements for filling the raised
concrete medians with dirt for sowing of grass and planting of trees, donated by
Mark Rose and Rose Seeding and Sodding,
Inc.. Citizens joined together on numerous Saturday mornings, bringing
rakes, shovels, brooms and even home garden tractors in successful
demonstrations of civic pride and teamwork. City employees and local
agencies also assisted, including the fire, police and EMS departments
respectively.
Neighbors
passing by on Market Street often honked, waved and offered comments of
appreciation to Beautification Committee members and volunteers, including the
Mayor and Clerk-Treasurer. Appreciation for bringing a new and inviting
atmosphere to the daily traveled hometown highway, always gave everyone that
second wind. Before long, the fifteen block downtown stretch of Market
Street looked brand new and clean as a new town. The pictures shown on
